Prof. S Balaram is an internationally reputed Designer and author with over four decades of teaching experience. Presently he is Founder Dean at D J Academy of Design and Emeritus professor of CEPT University, India. He had held top positions at the National institute of Design including chairman, Education and Governor. He founded the Craft Development Institute in Kashmir for Government of India.Many of his designs were produced and acclaimed. He has four patents to his credit. His numerous awards include – Ron Mace international award for Universal Design, Helen Keller award for outstanding contribution for people with disabilities, UNIDO-ICSID award for Design for Development and an honorary Fellowship of Society of Industrial Designers of India for life time contribution.

He was invited speaker at various International /National forums. One of the significant international meetings organized by him was the ‘UNIDO-ICSID meeting on Design for development’, the first such meeting to be held in a developing country. He was the first to champion the term ‘majority world’ to replace the derogatory ‘developing world’

Apart from the vast number of stories, articles and essays in journals, he has published books such as ‘Thinking Design’ (second edition); ‘Design quotes’ and sections in ‘Britannica Encyclopedia, ’Universal Design Handbook (second edition)’ and ‘Teaching Universal Design’. He was on the advisory board of ‘Design Issues’ a journal of international repute. He was one of the keynote speakers at the Second IAUD conference 2006, Kyoto and third IAUD conference at Hamamatsu 2010.

Professor Jayagovindan Menon

Professor & Head – Communication Design

J Menon has over 30 years of editorial and design experience working with main stream publishing and corporate communication across print and new media. Over 150 cartoons are to his credit, published in The Hindu and Madras Musings. Interviews and features on his work have appeared in The Hindu, Business Line, New Indian Express, Industrial Economist and British Council’s Connect. He is a recipient of the all India Kodak Award for Photographic Excellence (1987) and the Charles Wallace Award  (1999) for Post-graduate studies in design in the UK. Many of his works won national level awards for publication and corporate communication design. Menon has taught at the University of Madras, Asian College of Journalism and National Institute of Design (NID).
Mohan Chinnasamy

C Mohan has completed his Industrial Design from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He loves painting and thinks most of the time about school education. He started his career as a partner of a design firm at Chennai where he has worked on exhibition projects with MMDA, interior design projects with fashion stores and other graphic design assignments. He then moved on to teaching at the accessory design department at NIFT, New Delhi, wherein he also was trained at the Gemological Institute of America in Jewellery Manufacturing Arts.

He then set off to starting his own school with unconventional education system. During this time he was also teaching at the Visual Communication design department of CSI Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science, at Coimbatore.

Later he moved to the accessory Design Department of NIFT, Bangalore where he was the Chairperson of the program. He then joined ‘Human factors International’ at Pondicherry and trained himself to be a CUA – ‘Certified Usability Analyst’. Over the years he has also been doing product design and graphics design assignment with various companies in India and abroad.

Sudhakar Damodaraswamy

Sudhakar has 18 years of entrepreneurial and corporate experience designing for clients in India and internationally. Prior to DJAD he was the Head of the User Experience Design service at Infosys, where he was responsible for scaling ‘Innovation in Design’ to the enterprise scale, and delivering design services to Infosys’ clients across the globe.He has been extensively involved with curriculum formulation for the Interaction Design course at NID, Bangalore; the UX Academy at Infosys; and the Interaction Design discipline at DJAD. He has a number of innovative projects in Interaction Design to his credit and actively mentors innovation led start-ups.

Kanaka Ananth

Faculty – Industrial Design

Post Graduation in Toy Design.

Areas of Interest Developing creative thinking in kids, Toy & Game Design, Children with special needs, Systems thinking.

Kanaka Ananth has been in the board of advisor of the CHILD magazine which is part of the transasia group, USA. She was a faculty for design at NID, Ahmedabad and has previously worked with companies such as Creative Educational aids Pvt Ltd (Delhi), Funskool India Ltd (Chennai), before taking up a teaching position with D.J. Academy of Design, Coimbatore.

She has numerous games to her credit, that are available in the market such as Fast Track, Amazing Me, Buddies, Maths Whiz ,Discover Ramayana, Discover Mahabharata etc. She has extensive experience working with kids, has conducted multiple workshops on creative design and thinking for students at various schools and colleges in cities such as Bangalore, Chennai and Coimbatore. Workshops hosted by Kanaka cover a wide range of topics.

Seema Krishnakumar

Faculty – Communication Design

Seema is a Communication designer and Documentary photographer with a graduation in Civil Engineering. She joined National Institute of Design as part of Faculty Development Program in the Communication Design / New Media Department. Continuing her pursuit, she pursued her Post Graduation in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in New York with a Fulbright fellowship.

She has associated with several Governmental and non- Governmental organizations in Kerala as a Communication Designer. She was an Associate Producer at the Amrita Television. She was instrumental in starting the Kerala State Institute of Design and served as its Executive Director during 2008 – 2009. An avid traveler and seeker of stories, her photographs are published widely and she continues to write photo stories for the national daily The Hindu and many other publications.
