Dr. D Jayavarthanavelu was the Chairman and Managing Director of Lakshmi Machine Works Limited, Coimbatore, a renowned Textile Spinning Machinery manufacturer in India. LMW is one of the three leading textile machinery manufacturers in the world, manufacturing the entire range of textile spinning machinery.

After equipping himself in the Faculty of Engineering at Coimbatore, he studied B.S. Textiles at Philadelphia University, USA. Dr. Jayavarthanvelu had been conferred with Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa) by the Pondicherry university in April ’95. He was conferred another Doctorate by the Annamalai University in October ’95. He was awarded the Vivekananda National Award for Excellence by Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya on the occasion of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations during Feb. 2006.

Dr. D Jayavarthanavelu was a Member of the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve bank of India. He was a member of the Development Council for Textile Machinery Industry constituted by the Govt. of India.

Dr. Jayavarthanvelu was the Hon Vice Consul of Italy with jurisdiction over the State of Tamilnadu. He was the Chairman of the textile Machinery Manufacturers Association, India. He was granted the STATUS OF COMPANION of the Textile Institute, Machester in May ’95 and was the World President for the years 1998-2000, the first Asian to hold this high office. He was also the past Chairman of the Indian National Office of the Textile Institute.

Dr. Jayavarthanavelu was the Ex-President of the Kuppusamy Naidu Charity Trust which runs a 600-bed multi-speciality Hospital; a Higher Secondary School and a feeder school in Coimbatore; a high school at Palladam and an Arts College at Kovilpatti. He was a Trustee of the Coimbatore Masonic Charity Trust which runs a Childrens’ Hospital and a working women’s hostel. He was also the Vice President of the Coimbatore Zoological Park and Conservation Centre.

He was also an ace photographer.
